Lower Your Laundry Bill and Promote Wellness for Everyone
Have you ever wondered about ancient civilizations and peoples? I think about how various things were created that we still use today and how a seemingly insignificant change then could have an effect on how we live now.
Part of the human condition makes us change through discomfort. Comfort is one of our greatest diseases and prevents faster evolution. Struggle, hard times, or difficult choices ignite the creative forces inside us and if threatening enough our adrenaline and aggressive survival instincts.
When we read about history, it seems everything was recorded by the Egyptians or the Chinese, but that is only the last 5,000 years. Our palaeolithic ancestors were using utensils long before Egypt recorded them on papyrus. Painting or etching images on stone walls took time and were for grand stories, not crockery.
Dinnerware gets its traditional round shape from the potter’s wheel as they are spun from a ball into the desired plate, bowl, or cup shape. Using quality dinnerware has its advantages. If you choose disposable items, use renewable materials such as bamboo, banana leaf, or other pressed organic composites. They can easily be composted.
For best health, use a lead-free ceramic or stoneware dinner set. They are sealed or glazed to prevent bacteria growth, and/or staining. When I managed a charter yacht fleet, we used dining ware made of melamine for shatter resistance, but it was not eco-friendly.
Due to technological advances since the clay spinning wheel, ceramics can be found in many shapes and sizes to complete your dining set needs. Ceramics are durable, easy to clean, and environmentally responsible.

Our freshwater supply does not react well with the sulphates in liquid soaps. Our shampoo, shower gels, laundry, and liquid dish soaps all contain sulphates. It is extremely difficult and expensive to remove sulphates from your drinking water. It would require municipalities to treat all water with reverse osmosis. As taxpayers, we can not afford that and it is our responsibility to use fewer products with sulphates.
It is not difficult to replace one liquid soap with an eco-responsible option. Combine 500ml soda ash, and 500ml borax, then mix. Add 125ml salt, and 125ml citric acid powder, mix thoroughly, and store in an airtight container. This makes 32 loads of dish cleaner, using less than 40ml, per wash.
Lower your laundry costs significantly with a little time and mixing. Combine 225ml of soda ash, 225ml of borax, and one bar of your favourite scented Cussons Imperial Leather soap, grated. I know discussing shampoo and body soap is very touchy with brand-loyal consumers.
We all can benefit from saving money and reducing damage to our water supply by replacing our dish and laundry soaps. Save money, and help the environment should not be a tough sell for everyone who talks about caring for the environment.
That is how we address problems holistically. Eat eco-friendly food, on eco-responsible dinnerware, cleaned with eco-respectful soaps for less. You, your children, family, friends, and I benefit from those choices and thank you for making them.
